What is
Mental Resistance?
Psychological resistance is also called a behavior in which the mind starts to avoid doing things that feels daunting.
Paradoxical Definition: -
You have to make a start with time & money where you
get the desired result after doing so.
In business, this can be an example: - Unless you invest money in something you can't earn something. i.e. You have to spend money to make money.
In the case of Health, you have to start an exercise giving it time so your body stays fit and you remain fine.
If you don't give time to your health you can't be fit & fine.
This episode comes with an example as mentioned below
His job timing sucks him from 9 am in the morning to 7 pm in the evening with one holiday on Sunday each week.
So he decides to start an exercise in the morning with meditation as his new habit to stay fit and have good health.
He also decides to read books in the evening after he comes home from the job.
He continues with this hobby for a few days and one day he thinks to avoid it for today and will continue for tomorrow.
He conveys to his mind that this is only for today and will do it from tomorrow.
So when tomorrow comes he does not carry on any of his habits and many of such tomorrow's pass on.
This happens until his desire for these habits disappears from his mind.
We all have and are facing this type of problem in our lives at one point or the other.
What is the reason behind this and why does this keep happening with our habits?
This can be
because the habit we are trying to have can be a little overwhelming as a
result of mental resistance.
When we start our new habit, we are
super excited about this and motivated as it is easy to do something.
For example, going to a Gym for exercise
or 1 hour of Power Yoga does not sound that difficult.
This is because the initial motivation we gave ourselves had a
super exciting driving force.
When we are excited a lot we
plan big things as a result of our higher excitement and super motivation.
So If I read a book for 20 minutes every
day or I do power yoga for 1 hour straight for a few days, I decide to do it
daily.
After time passes on this habit fades
away and it feels daunting.
So instead of relying upon our motivation that
lasts for a shorter period, we must focus on making this habit an "actual
meaning of habit".
Many of us think that going to the gym for an hour can be hard before starting it, so here it is where the 2 minutes rule
comes into existence.
What is a 2-Minute Rule?
Author James Clear from the Book "Atomic Habits2 ”, says if you are having a problem
changing your habits, it isn't you. The system you have is the real problem as
bad habits everyone wants to change.
It's not you who don't want to change
the bad habits and have good ones but it's your system that's wrong.
When we try to start or think to do
power yoga for 1 straight our daily, it becomes daunting.
This is because humans are way too lazy
to start a new habit, and if the time involved is more then people usually skip
it.
What we need to do is change the period of the new habit that you have started.
- Reading Books
- Power Yoga
- Meditation
- Exercise
- Walking
- Jogging
What are a few factors that don't allow us to invest more time in our Habits?
· We have a lot of pressure on work
· Job tension in mind wakes up early and goes
· Family problems
· Divorce
· Mental tension
There can be many such problems as mentioned above that
won't allow you to have a habit that will take 1 hour of you in a day.
Any habit that takes 2 minutes for completion can't be daunting as the time involved is less.
When you start doing something it becomes easier to continue with it.
Below few examples that will Guide 2 Minutes Rule
Reading 1 page per day of a book within 2 minutes.
The expectation is to read the whole book, but do not try to read more than that if you are a beginner.
Read as many pages besides 1 within these 2 minutes.
Train yourselves with this habit to make an actual habit like a small baby tries to step ahead.
A
2-minute habit is much easy to continue as the mental resistance now is
no more and you are with the habit you had a desire to.
Using 2 minutes rule your goals should change to something like this: -
· Playing Match - Warm up yourself
· Start Blogging - Write one article
· Jogging - Walking first
· Walking - Wear your shoes first and go outside
For making a start these things are super important as
they make you start before you go for a longer course.
This falls down with suitable examples as such -
We can only eat food that our body allows for 1 day.
If the body eats food for 7 days in 1 day our body rejects & vomits it.
When we start a gym & if we do exercise for one straight hour, we experience body pain the other full week.
Our body can work for 12 straight hours in a day and if
worked for 14 to 16 hours in a day it experiences exertion.
My Example of, How I used 2 Minute Rule in my Life?
I was dealing with weight loss 4 since 2016 when I was 26 years old.
At that time I was having a weight of 70 Kg with a height of 5 feet and 5 Inches.
This ratio was on the border of turning overweight and I was tense at that time with my health.
I started running in the morning and also I started to see the experience in my weight loss.
But this motivation and passion disabled it one day when I was taught to take a leave from this.
The other day I woke up in bed, my mind explained to me about the winter season going on outside and I remained sleeping5.
This was because I thought it was damn difficult to wake this early morning and go running for 1 hour straight.
When I searched a YouTube video for weight loss exercise I came across the Power Yoga video.
In that video, Vinyasa explained the importance of practicing this for a short time.
With a starting 2 minutes tutorial that changed my life forever.
I started to make this my habit, and I continued it for 2 straight years resulting in maintaining my weight.
I kept practicing this for 5 days a week and 2 days as rest, because you may get bored doing the same every day.
And mind starts playing games on how to get rid of this habit, so it's important to take a break in a week.
Not only did this help me to reduce 8 kg of my weight6 but also made reduced my waist.
Before that, I tried going to the gym, walking, running and nothing helped me as it was so daunting.
But this formula worked as it became my habit and I do it daily for 20 minutes only.
So are many things we come around in our lives that are too daunting because of the time we have to give on it.
If I can make my weight 8 kg less with this formula so can you use this formula to make your habit an actual habit?
Why do People get Obsessed with giving a lot of time to any habit?
It is said that when humans started living on earth they had every type of food they desired to eat.
They didn't need any type of hard work to do to get food.
This food was in the form of crops, fruits, and many other types.
God had explained to all the humans at that time to avoid eating that single fruit which human was not allowed to.
But Humans started eating that fruit of which God gave humans a punishment that involved.
"Human on earth will not be able to eat anything unless they start doing work"
Hence humans have to work and get food to eat by although there is no supporting theory for this equation.
Humans do not want to do a lot of hard work, even if some desire to do hard work, they find it difficult.
Few people who are wealthy and rich enough find time for exercise as they have a lot of money and they want to stay alive for longer.
Some people are too poor to do such things as they work only for daily food.
Middle-class people have to work and also look after their families on a very specific budget.
With all the types of factors associated with their lives, they find it difficult to start any habit.
Even if they start they fail to continue this habit and make an actual habit.
So the Bottom line is: -
Start your habit that can last for at least 2 minutes.
Have a week's break from this habit.
Giving high motivations can turn up into failures and even stop doing something that was worth it for you.
Turn your habit into an actual habit by starting doing a little.
Higher expectations won't work when it comes to making a
habit.
